The Number of Veterans in the US
According to the most recent census, there are 18.2 million veterans in the United States. There are two million female veterans. A veteran is someone who has served in any branch of the military during times of war and peace.
States With the Most Veterans
California, Florida and Texas are home to most of the veterans in the country. There are 1.8 million veterans in California and 1.5 million in Florida. There are 1.7 million veterans in Texas.
Most Veterans are Over the age of 65
Ten million veterans in this country are over the age of 65. This is over half of the veterans in the United States.
Many Veterans Struggle With Homelessness
It is estimated that veterans make up 12 percent of the homeless population. Seventy percent of the veterans who are homeless also struggle with substance abuse. Fifty percent of them have mental issues such as post traumatic stress disorder. Post traumatic stress disorder makes it harder for people to hold down a job or have a family.
Many homeless veterans end up living up on the streets longer than they were deployed. The unemployment rate among Veterans is 6.2 percent.
Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a day that is set aside to pay respects to every veteran. It doesn’t matter whether the veteran is living or dead. It is different from Memorial Day. Memorial Day is set aside to pay respect to people who have lost their lives fighting for the country.
Veterans Day is observed on November 11th. Memorial Day is observed the last Monday of May.
